Sotavento brings the briny intensity of Spain's Atlantic coast to your table. These spicy sardines are packed whole in extra virgin olive oil, their natural oils mingling with the fruity richness of the oil and a careful heat that builds on the palate. At 180 grams, a single tin yields enough for a proper tapa course or the beginning of a composed salad.

About this product

Sardines thrive in the cold waters off the Iberian Peninsula, and Sotavento respects that heritage by using whole fish and no fillers. The heat comes not from added chili but from the sardines' own assertive character, sharpened by the oil's peppery finish. The tin is a workhorse: open it, arrange the fish on toasted bread with a squeeze of lemon, or scatter them into a grain bowl with roasted vegetables and a drizzle of the oil.

How to enjoy

  • On toasted bread with a thin spread of butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon.
  • Flaked into a salad of white beans, red onion, and sherry vinegar.
  • Straight from the tin as part of a Spanish tapas spread with cornichons and crusty bread.
  • Warmed gently and tossed with hot pasta, garlic, and parsley.

⭐ Why we love this

Sotavento captures the Atlantic's fierce character in a tin—whole sardines preserve their natural briny intensity and tender flesh, a hallmark of traditional Iberian conserva craftsmanship that rejects fillet convenience for authentic flavor. The spice emerges from the fish itself, not added heat, making this a honest expression of what Spain's cold waters deliver.

🍷 Pairing suggestion

Serve alongside a crisp Albariño from Rías Baixas—the wine's minerality and acidity cut through the sardines' richness and amplify their briny edge. Equally compelling with an ice-cold Fino sherry and olives for a proper Spanish aperitif, or drizzle the tin's peppery oil over grilled white fish at dinner.

📍 From Spain

Sotavento sources from Spain's Atlantic fishing grounds, where cold currents off Galicia and Portugal produce sardines prized for their dense flesh and natural oils. This coastal heritage defines the brand's commitment to whole-fish conservation, a method that honors centuries of Spanish seafaring tradition.

Customer Reviews

Overall rating: 5 / 5 from 1 reviews.

The USPS required a signature on the delivery. This was unknown to me. I had to drive 30+ mile to retrieve the item, vice delivery to my address.

Store owner replied: Thank you for the five stars, James, and I'm sorry about that drive. Our parcels travel as tracked international post with Correos in Spain, and USPS takes over for delivery in the US. We don't ask for a signature when we post, but it turns out USPS releases these parcels against one. At most addresses that just means signing at the door; in your case the delivery didn't go through, so USPS held it at the nearest post office, and that cost you a long trip. The surprise is partly on us, so we're adding a clear line about it to our shipping information. We can't give you back the time, but to cover the fuel we'd like to offer you $15 off anything in the shop on your next order. - Mateo, Iberian Direct
