The original Moscovitas: a wafer-thin Marcona almond biscuit under a chocolate coating, from Confitería Rialto in Oviedo. They are barely a few millimetres thick and shatter rather than crumble — which is the whole point of them.

About this product

Moscovitas are made from Marcona almonds — the flatter, sweeter, more tender Spanish almond — baked paper-thin and finished with a chocolate coating. The Spanish name on the box says it plainly: pastas finas de almendra y cobertura de chocolate, fine almond wafers with chocolate coating. There is no soft centre; the whole thing is crisp, and it is the almond you taste first.

Rialto has made them in Oviedo, in the northern region of Asturias, for decades, and they have become the sweet the region is known for.

How to enjoy

  • One or two after coffee — the traditional Asturian way.
  • Pair with Moscatel or a dry amontillado sherry.
  • Serve alongside a cheese board with Manchego and quince paste.
  • Straight from the box, which is how most of them disappear.

⭐ Why we love this

A Moscovita is almost nothing — almond, sugar, a little flour, chocolate — baked so thin that it has no interior at all. That is difficult to do consistently, and it is why Rialto still makes them one tray at a time rather than licensing the name.

🍷 Pairing suggestion

Moscatel de Valencia echoes the almond's own sweetness. A dry amontillado does the opposite and works just as well. Or strong espresso, which is what they are actually eaten with in Oviedo.

📍 From Spain

Oviedo, Asturias, on the green Atlantic coast. Marcona almonds come from Spain's Mediterranean east; Rialto brings them north and bakes them into the sweet Asturias is known for.

Customer Reviews

The USPS required a signature on the delivery. This was unknown to me. I had to drive 30+ mile to retrieve the item, vice delivery to my address.

Finca La Rosala Marcona Almonds with Rosemary – Roasted Spanish Snack – Pack of 2 (2 × 90g)

Store owner replied: Thank you for the five stars, James, and I'm sorry about that drive. Our parcels travel as tracked international post with Correos in Spain, and USPS takes over for delivery in the US. We don't ask for a signature when we post, but it turns out USPS releases these parcels against one. At most addresses that just means signing at the door; in your case the delivery didn't go through, so USPS held it at the nearest post office, and that cost you a long trip. The surprise is partly on us, so we're adding a clear line about it to our shipping information. We can't give you back the time, but to cover the fuel we'd like to offer you $15 off anything in the shop on your next order. - Mateo, Iberian Direct
