Barú's chocolate-covered marshmallows are a Spanish classic: pillowy, cloud-like centers cloaked in a snappy dark chocolate shell. Since the 1950s, this Madrid-based confectioner has perfected the balance between airy marshmallow and restrained cocoa coating — never too sweet, never heavy.

About this product

These are not the oversized carnival marshmallows of other countries. Each piece is delicate and portion-controlled, designed for the Spanish palate that prefers refinement to excess. The marshmallow interior is light and airy; the chocolate exterior provides structure and a subtle bitter note that cuts through without dominating. A box of 111 grams offers roughly a dozen pieces — ideal for sharing or rationing across a week of afternoon coffee breaks.

How to enjoy

  • Serve with strong Spanish coffee or hot chocolate for an afternoon merienda.
  • Pair with dessert wine or a small glass of brandy after dinner.
  • Tuck into a gift box for a nostalgic, recognizable present from Spain.
  • Store in a cool cupboard and enjoy one or two pieces when you crave something light and familiar.

⭐ Why we love this

Barú represents a distinctly Spanish approach to confectionery — restraint married with craftsmanship. Since 1950, this Madrid house has resisted the temptation to oversweeten, instead letting quality chocolate and genuine marshmallow speak for themselves. It's comfort food with elegance, perfect for the Spanish afternoon ritual.

🍷 Pairing suggestion

Enjoy with a strong café con leche during merienda, or pair after dinner with a small glass of Pedro Ximénez sherry or Spanish brandy. The dark chocolate's subtle bitterness cuts beautifully through the sweetness of dessert wine, creating a balanced finale to a meal.

📍 From Spain

Barú is a Madrid institution, hailing from Spain's capital where this confectioner has maintained the same exacting standards for over seven decades. Their commitment to the Spanish preference for delicate, refined sweets — rather than supersized American-style indulgences — makes them an authentic taste of mid-century Madrid confectionery tradition.

Customer Reviews

The USPS required a signature on the delivery. This was unknown to me. I had to drive 30+ mile to retrieve the item, vice delivery to my address.

Finca La Rosala Marcona Almonds with Rosemary – Roasted Spanish Snack – Pack of 2 (2 × 90g)

Store owner replied: Thank you for the five stars, James, and I'm sorry about that drive. Our parcels travel as tracked international post with Correos in Spain, and USPS takes over for delivery in the US. We don't ask for a signature when we post, but it turns out USPS releases these parcels against one. At most addresses that just means signing at the door; in your case the delivery didn't go through, so USPS held it at the nearest post office, and that cost you a long trip. The surprise is partly on us, so we're adding a clear line about it to our shipping information. We can't give you back the time, but to cover the fuel we'd like to offer you $15 off anything in the shop on your next order. - Mateo, Iberian Direct
