Canned Seafood FAQ

Canned Seafood FAQ

How do I read the best-before date on a can?

Every can we sell carries a best-before (or "best by") date printed or embossed on the lid or base. This date is set by the manufacturer and tells you until when the product is expected to be at its best quality. According to manufacturer guidance, the best-before date should always appear alongside conservation and storage instructions — usually on the label — so you know exactly how the product should be kept to reach that date in good condition.

A best-before date is not a safety cut-off in the same way as a "use-by" date, but we strongly recommend following the manufacturer's stated guidance. We do not advise consuming any product beyond its printed best-before date, and we cannot confirm food remains safe or at the intended quality after that point.

What should I do if a can arrives dented?

Minor surface dents along the side of a can — caused in transit — are usually cosmetic and do not affect the seal. However, you should contact us before opening or consuming the product if the can:

  • Has a dent on a seam or rim (the top or bottom edge, or the side seam)
  • Is bulging at either end
  • Makes a hissing sound or releases gas when you press the lid
  • Has any sign of leakage or rust that has penetrated the metal

These are potential signs of a compromised seal, which can allow bacteria to enter. Do not taste the contents. Email us at info@iberiandirect.com with a photo and your order number and we will advise you straight away.

What should I do if a can is bulging?

A bulging can is a serious food-safety concern. Bulging can indicate gas produced by bacterial activity inside the can. Do not open, taste, or force the lid. Keep the can upright in a cool place away from children and contact us immediately at info@iberiandirect.com with your order number and a photo. We will arrange a refund or replacement and advise on safe disposal in line with your local authority's guidance.

How should I store canned seafood before opening?

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Most canned seafood keeps well at normal room temperature (below around 25 °C / 77 °F). Avoid storing cans where temperatures fluctuate significantly, such as in a garage or shed. Always follow any specific storage instructions printed on the label, as some products — olive-oil packed tins, for example — may have additional guidance from the manufacturer.

How should I store canned seafood after opening?

Once opened, do not store food in the original tin. Transfer the contents — including any oil, brine, or sauce — to a clean, sealed, non-metallic container (glass or food-grade plastic) and refrigerate immediately. Consume within 2 days. These are general guidelines; always follow any specific after-opening instructions provided by the manufacturer on the label.

What if my order arrives damaged or not as described?

If something is wrong — damaged packaging, a compromised can, or a product that doesn't match what we described — don't send anything back. Just email us a photo and your order number at info@iberiandirect.com and we will refund or replace it straight away, at your choice. That has always been our position.

We confirm by email within 2 business days and process refunds to your original payment method, which typically appear within 5–10 business days depending on your bank.

Can I return a product I no longer want?

Yes — you have 45 days from delivery to change your mind, no questions asked. If the item is unopened, email us at info@iberiandirect.com and we'll tell you where to send it. Once it arrives we'll refund what you paid for the product. Return postage is yours to cover. Please note that EU consumer law does not grant a statutory right of withdrawal for sealed food goods once they have been unsealed, for health and hygiene reasons.
